Music is a diverse and exciting world. In my book “Guitar For Fun,” I explore two popular styles: pop and reggae. The main difference between these styles lies in the rhythm of the chords. Pop music is often a blend of various styles, as it’s short for “popular.” One such style is the tresillo rhythm, an Afro-Cuban rhythm that has been embraced by Western pop music. An example of this is the song “Clocks” by Coldplay. Listen to the distinctive 12312312 pattern in the main piano line. Another style is reggae, a Caribbean groove that gained global fame through the legendary Bob Marley. Its offbeat foundation creates a laid-back yet powerful vibe. If you speed it up, you’ll find dance music that uses the same offbeat rhythm. The changing rhythm is what makes each style unique and captivating, allowing us to move and groove to different styles.
